Cinema is the most influential public culture of the city of Bombay. The publicness of cinema goes far beyond its film productions and cinema viewing, in the sense that it permeates into all other social and cultural spaces that are not related to films. It can be said that Bombay cinema is much more expansive than Bollywood. The other art and intellectual practices of the city are deeply engaged with its cinema though might not necessarily be engaged with the making of films.

On the other hand, the city of Bombay is also home to a robust visual art scene. Hence it was a natural choice to have visual art as a methodology to archive the Cinema City.
